Serious brain damage can occur due to a stroke, heart attack, or head trauma. When brain cells undergo permanent damage, they cannot be replaced. Major loss of brain function results in brain death. An extensive examination must be done and criteria must be met and documented in order to declare brain death. Dr. Risola’s presentation addressees common misconceptions and misunderstandings about declaring brain death and explains how brain death is determined.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Increase audience members' comfort level with discussing brain death evaluation
  2. Dispel any misconceptions about the meaning of brain death or how it is diagnosed
